Video VIP-Opening 13.12.2024

The steepest cable car in the world is open! On Friday evening, December 13, 2024, the cable car was officially opened in the presence of over 600 guests. The lavish celebration, hosted by Monika Erb, took place in the new Stechelberg valley station. In addition to the official opening ceremony and rides on the new cable car, guests were able to take guided tours of the buildings to get an idea of the new Stechelberg and Mürren stations. Food and drink at various food stands and interesting interviews with project managers rounded off the supporting program. The party continued late into the night at the bar.

Birg station is the final destination: skiing without long queues

On Sunday, 13 October 2024, the cable car between Birg and Schilthorn will run for the last time. It will then have to make way for the new cable car. For this reason, the Schilthorn will not be accessible for five months, Birg will be the final destination.

However, after the opening of the new aerial cableways between Stechelberg and Birg in mid-December, the transport capacity at the Stechelberg, Mürren and Birg will be more than doubled.

Construction situation SCHILTHORNBAHN 20XX

The overall project includes direct connection between Stechelberg and Mürren, the replacement of the cable cars on the Mürren-Birg and Birg-Schilthorn routes and the reconstruction of all the stations. Construction work is currently taking place at all stations and restrictions and noise emissions must be increasingly expected. For safety reasons, the Thrill Walk at the Birg station is temporarily closed or only partially accessible. The Birg and Schilthorn route and the summit building with the 360° restaurant Piz Gloria are closed until mid-March 2025 due to the construction of the new cable car.

Milestones in an overview:

  • Opening direct connection Stechelberg – Mürren: 14th December 2024
  • Opening of the route Mürren – Birg : 14th December 2024
  • Opening of the route Birg – Schilthorn: March 2025 (The Schilthorn will be closed between October 2024 and March 2025!)
  • Finalisation of the entire project: Spring/Summer 2026
