In October 2020, representatives of the municipality of Lauterbrunnen, Schilthorn Cableway Ltd and the village of Gimmelwald signed an agreement concerning the development of the village with the motto "A Heart for Gimmelwald".
Access to Gimmelwald has been provided by Schilthorn Cableway since 1965, underpinned by a public contract with the federal government and Canton Bern which funds the development of the villages of Gimmelwald and Mürren. As a part of the SCHILTHORN CABLEWAY 20XX project, Schilthorn Cableway will now be opening a new direct connection between Stechelberg and Mürren.
During the project planning process, concerns arose in Gimmelwald that the village might lose its transport access at some point in the future due to this new connection. To allay these concerns, an agreement was drawn up that guarantees year-round cableway access to Gimmelwald and Mürren based on the existing regular-interval timetable until the concession and operating licence expire in 2035.
Should the concession and operating licence expire at that time, Schilthorn Cableway will apply for an extension and take the necessary steps, provided that the obligation to provide access to Gimmelwald is met and subject to an extension request from the federal government and Canton Bern. Joint talks on measures to enhance location appeal will also take place on a yearly basis.
