Carbon-certified winter car park in Stechelberg

In winter, the capacity of the car park in Stechelberg is increased without causing any damage to cultivated farmland. The adjacent meadow is fitted with simple timber elements in autumn. These movable elements prevent the soil from being compacted and ensure that meltwater can seep away unimpeded during thaws. This keeps the sod intact and means that the meadow can be cultivated again immediately after the season ends.

On busy days, this creates around 320 additional parking spaces, thus dispensing with the need for inconvenient shuttle bus journeys to and from more distant car parks.

And that's not all: wood is a natural construction material with an added benefit – it binds CO2, which the tree extracts from the atmosphere during the growth cycle through the process of photosynthesis. This retention capacity makes an important contribution to protecting our climate.

As a result, Schilthorn Cableway received an award for environmentally friendly soil protection from the Swiss CO2 Bank: 202 tonnes of CO2 are stored in the timber grates of the car park. This is equivalent to the amount produced by one Swiss resident in around 41 years.

Sustainability impact

  • Wood is a natural construction material
  • Protection of cultivated farmland
  • No need for environmentally harmful alternatives (e.g. shuttle buses)
