The fuel consumption of a fleet of snow groomers during the winter months is extremely high. A single vehicle consumes around 30 to 35 litres of fuel per hour. On average, a day of piste operations costs around CHF 2000 in fuel.
Our eight snow grooming vehicles run on almost sulphur-free alpine diesel. With low-temperature resistance up to minus 30 degrees, this fuel is ideal for use in extreme conditions. However, it also costs around three to five centimes more than regular diesel. With an average consumption of about 220,000 litres of fuel per winter season, the extra outlay amounts to several thousand francs.
However, the ignitability of the high-quality winter diesel, as alpine diesel is also known, is much higher, since the necessary low-temperature properties mean that higher-boiling components are partially dispensed with. This in turn results in lower fuel consumption, which has a positive effect on both energy footprint and costs.
Sustainability impact
- The higher ignitability of high-quality, low-temperature resistant winter diesel results in lower fuel consumption.
